Goodbye Carrier, Back To The "Normal" Madness

Fellow Pilots,
Welcome Back!  The summer term at the U begins today.  First things first: we wrote "Sir Shocks-A-Lot" for Pixonic's web page, extolling the virtues of using the new-ish energy weapons on a certain shielded robot we all know and love.  Check it out!

Second, we asked Pix to confirm our findings about map and mode distribution.  Regarding maps, they said, "Carrier had a higher rate up until now.  Now it's back to the expected 10%."  Readers of this blog reminded me that the introductions of other maps have seen them in heavy rotation as well.  In short - we were right.  Pixonic had programmed the queue to run 40% of all battles on Carrier.  One takeaway - the probabilities in the "random" queue are changeable, sometimes without notice.

We're glad the Carrier "debut" is over, because most people didn't need a whole bunch of reps on the boat!  It's totally straightforward (pun intended) - capture center and use the lower deck as cover.  Regarding modes, Pix said, "Modes are random currently, no additional factors there."  So we asked some adjunct professors to keep track of all their battle placements: date, map, and mode.

A reader on the Forum hypothesized that high rates of pilots leaving TDM and KOTH in the first 15 seconds of a battle caused other pilots to be drafted as replacements.  At the U, we thought this might show up in the data as a higher rate of these modes.  The theory was that we could understand the true "popularity" of each map and mode IF pilots skipped out and their spots had to be filled.  It didn't happen.  In almost 400 battles, the distribution of maps and modes was random.  There are at least two possible explanations - first, perhaps people don't skip maps/modes at detectable rates (or they could leave after the last moment they could be replaced).  Second,

Streaks happen, and things don't always feel evenly distributed, but as the sample size grew larger, the rates of each map/mode approached the expected probability.  If you are keeping track at home, it's 10% for each map and 25% for each mode in the current random queue.  So if you are waiting with five quad Treb Butches for a Team Death Match at Yamantau, the chance of getting that combination is only one in 40 (thank God!)!

Here's the data (sorry if the formatting gets weird; Blogger gave me pretty limited options for importing this table):

Coming up, and I never thought I would say this, we have a piece extolling the virtues of "camping."  In Team Death Match and Free For All mode, smart pilots are waiting behind cover - and exploiting the lack of patience displayed by their opponents.  See you soon!

    1. Rigged is a strong word ... at the U, we are just hoping for the true odds to be transparently displayed!
