Do As The Romans Do

Fellow Pilots,
Rome has been in heavy rotation since its introduction in the 4.0 update, so the University faculty has had time to form some early impressions.  Whether you've ever visited the "eternal city" or not, you will recognize the Coliseum as the central feature on the game map.

The expression "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" means to follow the local norms and customs wherever you are.  Romans don't hang out at the Coliseum - that's for tourists, like Times Square in New York and Bourbon Street in New Orleans - and neither should you.

Instead, flank your enemy and pressure them to compete for the whole battlefield.  You spawn near either ALPHA or ECHO, so grab it and choose a side.  The best route to victory is possession of both sides; like Shenzhen and Dreadnought, encircle your enemy and wipe them out.

One important difference between Rome and the maps described above is the amount of cover provided by the Coliseum.  Once inside, you can only be attacked from above by a Hover, though homing missiles and artillery will reach you as well.  Thus, one can capture CHARLIE (center) and use it as a foothold for an assault on either side.

The red team got the memo.  I died attempting to capture BRAVO without sufficient support!

Note that all beacons have cover, and the ones across the central axis (BRAVO-CHARLIE-DELTA) have lines of sight to each other.  The battle will generally be won or lost by the team that controls this axis.  We can see plenty of different scenarios for how you do this, and the most common is to grab a beacon and work toward another along the axis.  You could also run the "option," by going toward the center and breaking right or left depending on what the defense gives you.

Here's an example video in Gold league, where the Blue team seizes four beacons and puts the battle out of reach very quickly (under four minutes).

Arachnophobia Skirmish
In the golden age of War Robots, the test server had all sorts of psychodelia and madness.  I vividly recall a weapon that fired beach balls and a map with pulsing electronic music, among other things.  This week's "arachnophobia" Skirmish mode features giant helldiving Schutzes and tiny dashing Raijin -- and it is good fun.

Anomolous Battle Reports
I can't think of many battles that ended before I got hit by a single shot from the enemy, but I had one the other day.  My team (which included three from Russia's clan Imperial) got all five beacons in the first minute, and I caught one enemy Spectre napping with my Hovering Death.  Thus, my repair costs were zero and the silver reward was almost exactly the same as my damage total.  I guess you get 4499 Ag per beacon?  The reward formulas have always been a bit of a mystery to me, and I haven't tried to figure them out.

Happy Friday, and may your team win the World Cup,
Doc Yat

  1. Good to know how to conquer Rome, when the time comes.

    1. The visual angles are flatter, to my eyes, than Yam or Shenzhen ... somehow it feels "lower." But the goal is the same - get three beacons while your opponents have two!
