The Good Old Days Are Gone

Fellow Pilots,
In case you didn't hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth, the "new economy" has been introduced.  As you know, we don't generally fret how Pixonic makes money, but I took the unusual step of warning the company that the new upgrades are so cost and time prohibitive that I believe they will trigger a recession.  We'll come back to what that means in a moment.

Let's take Exodus for example.  To reach level 12, this weapon will require 165M Ag and either 8727 Au or 58.5 days of time.  Add 500 gold and double the above figures (330M Ag and 17.4K Au) to reach MK2 level 12.  To avoid waiting, one could drop about $1000 in cash for the gold and silver.

The next upgrade was even worse: 70M silver and 14 days/2500Au.

In the field of economics, a recession is a decline in overall economic activity that lasts for two consecutive quarters or more.  People spend less; businesses react by cutting back on new hires and wages.  This creates a loop, and people spend even less, which hurts business more, which cuts back further, and the cycle gets harder to break.  Even before recessions begin, Americans buy far fewer new cars.  While recessions last, they invest in used cars and repair old vehicles much longer than they would in good economic conditions.  That Natasha you won on a silver chest spin six months ago is looking better and better, isn't she!

You probably don't need the U to tell you that it's a good time to upgrade the things you already have.  We believe in making your favorite robots more durable, and stronger gunboats should have your best weapons because they remain on the field longer, doing greater damage.  So take those good old Tarans to 12!  Take your level 12 weapons into the MK2 cycle.  I think I have some Tridents lying around ...

As an alternative, you could stop upgrades entirely.  There are pilots (my kids included) who have decided to keep their items at level 6 (and other points, like level 9 robots for the best speed) and let the league ratings fall where they may.  In case you haven't seen our articles on playing in bronze and gold leagues without tanking, it's a place where time stands still.  Especially for Zenit bombardiers! To read about many successful approaches during this difficult time, check out the War Robots Reddit.

Where does it all end?  There is an iron rule in economics: when demand falls, prices must follow.  Like professional economists, we armchair types won't know if a recession is happening until we're well into it, but the hallmark feature will be good deals on new stuff as the companies try to attract people back into the market.

Happy Tuesday,
Doc Yat at the team at the U

  1. I think the good old days disappeared with the introduction of the Dash robots. That marked the beginning of the end, unbalanced robots, OP weapons and new modes that you can't choose between.

    1. Yes, I couldn't agree more. As a player of 2 1/2 years pre-dash, whenever there were changes made in the game (i.e. new bots and weapons), there was always a good period of adjustment to follow. Now the game changes more in a month than in 6 months pre-dash. I miss the good ole days, and if there was a "Walking War Robots Classic" game, I think there would be nostalgic players like me who would enjoy it.

    2. I played for about a year before Dash and I agree. The game updates were well balanced before Dash, after they were completely op and unbalanced.

    3. I don't disagree with either of you at all. The title isn't meant to be specific, and the slippery slope has undoubtedly existed for a long time! There are so many little things - the introduction of the "wild bunch" and influence points, the Tempest, the Anniversary event where players could spin with gold, Royale, Black Market ... and, of course, the pricing of the Dash robots. The name of the game now, of course, is selling OP content to the buyers who are willing to pay for it. I'm interested to see if Pixonic will appeal to the large number of F2P or small expenditure players in any major way. Like Dominic, I miss the "good old days" too. I joined the game after the introduction of the British set, so there has always been OP content for me. I also endured the seal-clubbing Gepard packs in the pre-league matchmaker. How amazing it would be to play Domination exclusively with robots that were balanced!

  3. I hate the AIRPLANES. Now many battles are in the air! I wanted and loved the ground game, it's gone. The game is ruined! I want battles without airplanes! Anyone else hate the air game? And OMG more maps!! Unreal had 100s of maps.
