The Dragoon Dragon

Fellow Commanders,
We are often counseled not to mix weapon ranges and types on the same robot.  Generally speaking, this is good advice - but you can create some interesting matchups with "Frankenstein" builds.  Add a Halo or two on a robot previously toting Gusts; put a Corona on a Scourge Spectre ...

In the case of Ao Jun, there's a built-in Ember.  Its range, like the stand-alone version, is 350m.  So it's a match with Redeemers and Embers, and pretty close with Avengers, Thunders, or Glory.  As we stretch out the distance, you almost never see the Dragon sporting Dragoons, Tridents, Tempests, etc.  Why not?  Ao Jun is an incredibly versatile robot with great speed and manoeuvrability.  At the U, we think this brawler can breathe life - and fire - into your midrange game.

Just about everybody knows I love Springfield and fast robots, so here's a second video on the original "long" map:

Our advice is pretty straightforward:

  1. use Ao Jun's feet to get into striking distance
  2. use its wings to escape.

Staying on the ground preserves your ability for opportunities like catching other dragons on landing, targeting Lokis in the open, and attacking slow moving Titans.  Think like a basketball player - if someone gets you off your feet, they have you where it's a lot harder to recover your position.  Ao Jun can be a sitting duck if it is down without its ability ready, so Dragoons give you distance and safety.  You are out of "leech reach," you've got time to nail Phantoms on approach, and there are no built-in weapons that can really hurt you between 500 and 600 meters.

One caveat - because you are going to be so hard to catch and kill, keep your eye on the beacon bar.  You are no good to the team if you've camped out and scored a million and a half in damage while they mech out trying to secure beacons.  As always, balance the needs of the team with your own tactics and strategy!

Hope you had a great holiday season,
Doc Yat
