The Sweet Spot is Diamond League

Fellow Commanders,
As you know, the game formerly known as Walking War Robots is "pay to win."  This can be frustrating, because you can get curb stomped by a few people who spend a lot more money than you do.  But the news is not all bad.  P2W games allow a very large number of free-loading coattail riders like myself to play a great mobile game for next to nothing.  The very numerous free/low-paying players make the wait times reasonable, and we give the killer whales someone to beat on.

The introduction of Titans makes War Robots even less structurally equal.  The big guys are obtainable only via a new currency, platinum.  Platinum is $100USD for 700; the titans take 7000-10,500 to fully upgrade, and of course this doesn't include the weapons.  You read that correctly - you'll need to drop somewhere between one and two thousand dollars if you want to roll with a maxed-out (Y)Ao Ming right now.  Those who grind can obtain 600-1000 platinum per month through the in-game tasks; their Titans will be maxed out in, well, a couple years.

There's a way, however, to enjoy War Robots without being cannon fodder in the most lopsided battles.  Stay out of Champion league!  Because their Leeches, Phantoms, and Titans get upgraded instantly, high-spending players quickly overpower their opponents and arrive in Champs.  In the leagues below, however, inequality in the game is somewhat diminished.  A smart commander who keeps his robots and weapons at a lower level (I suggest 7-8) can remain in Gold, Diamond, or Expert league without unethical practices like intentionally losing.

In my case, two (2) of my seventeen (17) human children have accounts in lower leagues, and I dabble with these profiles from time to time to better understand the state of the game.  Remember the Cossack, the Leo, and the Rogotka?  They are still awesome.  I would encourage anyone beginning the game now to limit upgrades and enjoy the free experience spending players provide.

My older son's Diamond league account is the fun one right now.  It contains three Ravens, a Lancelot, and a Pursuer, all level seven.  Weapons are level seven except the Gusts on the Pursuer, which are level eight.  There are no gold modules in this account, and the pilots are level 20 or below.  I only use silver to obtain new items in the workshop and to bring them to level 7.  I might be able to play this account to expert league but I sincerely doubt I could get any higher.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with how the matchmaking system works, it is based on your rating exclusively, and it prioritizes matches with people in your league first, then players one league higher and one league lower.  This isn’t perfect, but it allows for a generally fair battles and reasonable weight times.

I’ve provided two video examples of gameplay.  I don’t dominate in Champ league either, but even so, a defining feature of these battles is the competitiveness.  There are some overpowered bots, but you just don’t see the guy hanging 4M damage and 20 kills on you.  You can see from the scores that players are more evenly matched; almost every player has similar results in terms of kills, beacons, and damage.

I can’t say exactly how much I will play these lower league accounts in the future, but I do intend to provide advice for lower league players.  Here goes: USE SOME PLATINUM and get your Titan going (preferably the Kid).  That's a departure from advice given to champs.  Titans, as you will see in the video examples, cut through the Griffins and Galahads with complete impunity - so use them as soon as you can in each battle.  In Champ league, your slow, weak Titan is just food for Leeches, so keep your platinum and leave the Titan on the bench if possible.  Win the game with your best five regular robots first.

Summary (for leagues below Champion):
  1. Keep robots and weapons under-leveled (7-8); the game-wide average and test server default is level 8.
  2. Use your workshop to obtain new items - right now Ao Guang is a steal; you can also build a Phantom or Loki.  Any of the three will get you wins.
  3. Level up your free Titan as much as your resources allow and deploy it in battle as soon as possible.

Anomalous Battle Reports

Unfortunately, clan 7EC ditches matches, leaving their random teammates to die, when they see a tough squad across the field.  Bonjour, monsieurs - c'est terrible.  Don't. Do. It.  If you are going to dish it out, you have to be able to take it when it happens to you.  Note that these screenshots are from two different games.

Everyone knows that Loki is a good beacon capper.  It can keep the game alive while your brawler friends wipe out the red team.  Try it out for assassinations, though: sometimes they never see you before you start shooting.

Your humble servant and deranged whale chasing Ahab,
Dr. Yat
