Time For A Sabbatical

Fellow Pilots,
This is a fun blog to write, but I'm going to take a sabbatical until further notice to advance the lives of my fourteen (14) human children.  Well, maybe it's only three, but it feels like fourteen when they come home from school with a hundred bits of homework to complete before dawn.  Don't worry - Professor Dutch has a ton of content to share, and I will pop in from time to time with a (brilliant) thought for our dozen or less readers!

One post that remains in the pipeline regards the venerable Power Plant map.  Pilots who spawn directly across from the "beach" (beacon ALFA) and alley (beacon BRAVO) should ALWAYS focus on holding this critical territory along with their "observatory," the domed building with the third beacon.  Do NOT rush through the observatory to the far side (CHARLIE) unless you want to hand the red team an easy victory.  Your team will be spread too thin to defend your beacons.

In today's instalment of "stupid robot tricks," did you know a Spectre can stick the landing on top of the Coliseum (Rome map)?  It's not a great place to hang out, because you can be targeted from just about anywhere.  All the same, sometimes they don't see you from below, and if you can wait for the right victim ...

Here, a friendly Mercury lands on the shoulders of my Nemesis for a game of chicken against the other team.  It would be AMAZING if he could stay there long enough to jump again.

I also have an anomalous battle report for you.  I can't recall seeing anyone in champion league with a three slot hangar, but that's exactly what Speedy 786 has managed.  He has almost 8500 wins and a 52% win rate with his three robots, and two of these are weapon mixing relics of a bygone era.  Well done, Speedy.

Stay tuned to this station for great video content courtesy of Professor Duke Dutch.  I remain your humble servant and robot wrangler,
Dr. Yat

  1. Hey Dr. Yat (Paul), Taking care of the family is always priority #1 and you will be sadly missed. I have always found your tactics and strategies to be spot on and very sound...however, recently after months (years) of casual gameplay, I now find myself scraping the bottom of champ league (iOS) and have discovered an entirely new philosophy on playing/winning BR/DOM. To quote Gotchure Beacons (YT channel), he stresses "3 and hold", which I am a firm believer in; Yet experience these past few months in champs league has shown me that many players in champ league prefer damage ("hunting for silver") over beacon capping and play extremely aggressively in an effort to mech out the opposing team as the preferred method of winning to maximize their silver reward. Now my hangar could never sustain any kind of aggressive push, but many can.
Ever since the magnum/gepard squads of yesteryear I have always encountered full squads completely annihilating randoms, which of course, continues to this day, and have always accepted that as part of the game given that usually it comes in the form of tankers; But now, in champ league, there are no tankers and I have experienced that the practice is common and very brutal. It's not just about winning to them, it's about brutal, quick, complete and total destruction of the opposing team. So I am left asking myself "At what point is the game about winning and having fun vs. playing competitively?" Part of the same question is when do all the tactics and strategies no longer matter and pure brute force becomes the key to winning ?
Getting back to an older article about tanking...well I can see now why some players would choose to do so. After months/years of grinding to get to champ league, getting steamrolled day after day by top clans is just no fun.

    Regards, Dominic M

    1. Thanks for the kind words Dom! I'm just going to limit my activity. On the game points, I think you are right. It's a natural extension of the inequality in the game since Dash prices and MK2 came in - Pix wanted to rip the ceiling off for spending, and the game has really suffered. I used to think (as you probably did) that five level 12 Ancilots was tough. How quaint! Now, the gulf between a regular champ and a whale/big spender is 30-50% on both the health AND damage sides of the ball. We're not even considering special abilities. I will say that it's much better to get in a good clan. You still get crushed by NEXT and LOST, but the games with TB and many others become competitive and fun.
