Contest: the Art of the Assist

Fellow Pilots,
In many sports, players are credited with an “assist” for an act that immediately precedes a teammate’s scoring play.  It’s the pass before the shot on goal.  In our game, there are countless ways to create opportunities for teammates - beacon running, shielding, double teaming, flanking, and more.  The common thread: this kind of play is selfless.  It’s helpful.  It makes your team win.

In basketball, no one has ever been better at the assist than John Stockton - a short, unassuming white guy who drove to his NBA games in the family minivan.

In honor of all those pilots who do the little things, Pixonic and War Robots University are teaming up to recognize your efforts.  For the next three weeks, we’ll introduce a task on Monday and post it here.  You capture screenshots or video of your work, and share it as a reply.  The best two for each week will be shared on the U’s blog and earn a robot of your choice!

Contest rules:
  • Do something awesome to help your team.
  • Capture your awesomeness in 1-3 screenshots or a video of 90 seconds or less.  Use the keyword #WRassist in the title of your video.
  • Feel free to caption or describe your assist using less than 150 words.
  • Post your "assist" as a reply to the War Robots University post in “general” which announces the weekly theme at http://war-robots-forum.freeforums.net
  • Dr. Yat’s selections will be based on the instructive value and uniqueness of your post; decisions will be final
  • Prize robots do not include update 3.6 (Strider and Spectre are off limits for now)

Advices:
  • Damage isn't awesome by itself.
  • Results screenshots are not awesome in the absence of context.
  • Forum posts that criticize or demean other pilots will not endear the judge to your entry.

And speaking of the Forum, the U's faculty finds it ironic that several members have been overtly nasty to the U in recent days.  Even as we were working with Pixonic to put this contest together, we read accusatory posts about "using" people for views, "hit and run" tactics (not even sure what that means), "your approach has been as welcome as spam in my inbox," and "should be tagged drinpixspocket."  Indeed.  So here's the U's disclaimer for the contest - ALL OF THE SIX WINNERS WILL GET A ROBOT FROM PIXONIC.  It's a PROMOTION.  Pixonic gets players, the U gets readers, and you get robots.  If you don't think that's fair, above board, or you just don't like it, DO NOT ENTER.  That way the University won't provide something free to an ungrateful bastard.*

*Said with love, but if you are one of those bastards, we aren't really interested in hearing about it.

So get out there and make some assists!  Pass the ball.  Set a screen.  Dive for something.  We look forward to the "grading" the cool stuff you are about to create.

Your humble servant,
Dr. Yat

  1. I think this is great. I'm a new player to WR, and in a short amount of time I've read a lot of criticism about the game's recent catering to "pay to winners" and "tankers". Pixonic appears to be trying to reverse this perception/ reality. We all can and should debate the efficacy of their moves. But questioning the intent behind encouraging fair and unselfish play through this contest is misguided. I can't wait to see what gets posted. Good luck everybody.

  3. This is a neat contest, and I appreciate that it doesn't have to be video (I mean, figuring out video recording is still on my to-do list) and that it's focused on teamwork and strategy. I have a few questions about entering as well:
-the tasks to be introduced on Mondays, are these like 'themes' for assists to be posted that week? (like a shielding week or suppressive fire week)
    -can people enter multiple times?
-WRU will create a thread in the general discussion section where we will post our assists?

    1. On the forum, AVC. Both sites will have the directions, but I think the forum allows better sharing of the creations.

    1. Until I run out of steam, I post every week day at 9AM GMT. The contest will post, at least here on the blog, at 6AM on Monday; I'll create the forum thread when I wake up (sometime later than 6AM, for sure)!
