Events: love 'em or hate 'em

Fellow Pilots,
Events: love them or hate them, they are here to stay.  It is safe to say that players play and spend more during these periods.

I am not being super precise with my dates, but the Halloween event started before Halloween and ended sometime around Thanksgiving.  Like the ever-creeping "shopping season," the Christmas event started pretty much immediately afterward, and it will extend into January - just like the break from school for my thirty-eight* children.

*It's actually three, they just make noise and eat like thirty-eight.

Now that "events" are pretty much "always" in War Robots, the U has been observing some even weirder than usual pilot behavior.  Before we get to it, I realizing that some of the readers of this blog may not be familiar with War Robots University terminology (like "whale," yesterday).  So here's a quick glossary:

  • Tanker - a pilot manipulating his/her rating downward by sabotaging the team into a losing battle
  • Damage whore - a pilot manipulating his/her rating upward by scoring high damage, disregarding the needs of the team
  • Camper - a stationary pilot, disregarding the territorial control aspect of the game
  • Clubber - a pilot exploiting matchmaking/squad play to get all or most battles against far weaker players
  • Time Droppers - groups of pilots seeking battles against allies to accomplish event tasks in a coordinated fashion
New observation for me: team tanking.  The whole group is dropping battles in seconds without even spawning.  They plummet downward in the ratings, as you can see from "baba NEWRA" below, and then club their way back up, earning a ton of gold and silver on the way.

I don't know what this guy is doing, but it smells funny.  How do you have no damage at all but a 96% victory rate?  One possibility is that he's a time-dropper in the middle of a long win streak to accomplish an event task, with a LOT of assistance from his clan.

Usual camper stuff, probably SUPER frustrating for his team ... M is still in his first robot as time drips away in a nail-biter on Yamantau.  He sat in one position with Zenits the whole battle, and his team lost in the waning moments.

I'm using the Hover's long glide to assist my teammate on the far side of the field.  Hang on, little buddy!  Wait ... why are they not shooting at him?  Sorry, kids, didn't mean to interrupt your beacon swapping match.

Here's another example.  The normally merciless clan USSR is standing around this allied Cossack from Discordians as they trade beacons.

Lord Inner is on a beacon task.  I know this because he is grabbing a few lights in a level 1 Cossack and then ejecting the battle, leaving me in a five-on-six situation.  I'm lucky enough to get teamed with him several battles in a row, all of which we lose.  Thanks!

Pilot pilot 0 kills himself repeatedly, then takes a couple of shots and leaves the match, handing the blue team an easy victory on Yamantau.  I'll take it.  Note the Punisher Galahad in the skeleton skin ... for me, the coolest robot in the game.  He's an easy out for an Orkan HeyChee if they get close, but he can make it hard for them to get close!

Camper/damage whore Michael (GER) is in his first robot watching our team get murdered on Yamantau.  I don't know if it is event-related, but he definitely wasn't getting wins or beacons!  Maybe he was trying to steal a few kills.

I'm sure there will be more event-related insanity in the next few weeks.  Please play the game right -making a real attempt to win - for your fellow pilots.  If you've got other stories about things you've seen, feel free to drop me a line via the comments below.

Keep firing and keep moving,
Dr. Yat
