Springfield Strategy: Make it Stalingrad

After the Nazis seized political power in 1933, Hitler built the German Wehrmacht into a nearly unstoppable force (and made himself commander-in-chief).
Hitler's war machine steamrolled Europe, but stalled deep in Russia, as all armies do when they can no longer be resupplied/reinforced. The lesson of Stalingrad, for military strategists, is that overreaching has disastrous consequences.
In our game, we can apply the same principle - opponents who travel far from home are usually damaged and alone. But a surprising number of pilots fail to recognize which beacons are the hardest for their opponents to reach.
We've written at length about Springfield before in "Flanking Maneuvers", but thought that presenting the information as a kind of "decision tree" might be helpful. Americans who watch our peculiar brand of "football" (the one with the brain-damaged gladiators) have heard the retired warriors on TV talk about quarterbacks "going through their progressions." This is American-footballspeak meaning "order of operations."
1) Make sure the two beacons on your end of the battlefield are secure.
2) Attack the most likely third beacon for your opponent to reach.
4) If you don't have a third beacon, back to step #2! Either way, staying on one side of the river is the kiss of death for your team. Someone has to cross, and work hard to win - let it be you!
In this image, the blue team has secured its home and captured the most likely third beacon for the red team (BRAVO). While the red group can certainly push for ECHO (or, if in possession of BRAVO, they could attack ALPHA), they will be too far from home/too close to where the blue team spawns. It's Stalingrad (now called Volgograd): where invading armies go to die.
We recognize that the best laid plans can fall apart if you run into thirty Spectres (the robot du jour for the whale pods) or if you have a tanker on your team. If you run your self over to BRAVO and your team falls apart, losing your home beacons, you lose fast. Our strategy assumes a relatively even match, and a mode where beacons still matter.

- If the teams spawned in the riverbed, you MUST win at BRAVO.
- If the teams spawned on the platform/docks, you MUST win at DELTA.

So, it took FOREVER to get a Domination match on Springfield. This makes us wonder how useful our strategies will be in the future - if TDM, KOTH, and now "Free For All" take hold, War Robots might not be a thinking man's game anymore!As always, thanks for visiting.

I remember one time that I was in my Fujin and a Natasha decided to take advantage of my energy shield. (Too few pilots do that). We held Bravo without any opposition and then when our allies on the other side of the river took Delta it was game over.
ReplyDeleteTrue - I wish more pilots would share my shield. I'd like to hang a big sign, like "This Space For Rent," or, "Raijin will protect you!"
